The Voice of Iyah May – A Few Songs Against Power

If you’ve felt alone, in pain or unseen from all the terrible things that have been going on in our world, particularly over the last 5 years, this song is for you. Stay strong. Iyah May

I wanted to create a reimagined version of ‘Wish You Were Here’ firstly because it’s a beautiful and timeless song by Pink Floyd and secondly because it resonates deeply with modern times, even 50 years after its release.

At its core, I feel it speaks to the recurring human experience of loss, disconnection, and yearning for authenticity. Are we as a society repeating history- failing to learn from past mistakes of war, political division, and environmental or human neglect? Could we be doing more to learn from our past?

If covering this song showed me anything, it’s that no matter the time in history, humans still share the same emotional and spiritual struggles.

This is my rendition of John Lennon’s original ‘Working Class Hero’.

I feel Working Class Hero is a critique of how institutions shape people to comply in schools, workplaces, media, government etc. Decades later, the same dynamics are still playing out through tech monopolies, political theatre, and manufactured division. It’s relevant because the power structures he pointed to never went away. If anything, this message is even more relevant now.

In the early 1900s, John Rockefeller donated hundreds of millions of dollars to reshape a new education system. The local, creative, community learning was replaced with school bells, rows of desks, rigid grades, and memorisation. A system built for efficiency, not imagination.

Instead of cultivating creativity or independent thought, the system was built to create predictable, compliant workers who could fit into factory-style structures.

Frederick T. Gates, Rockefeller’s top advisor, said, “We shall not try to make these people philosophers or men of learning… We shall try to make them what the situation demands… obedient… and fit to do the tasks needed.”

Today, this factory model still shapes our education system. Absolutely wild.

While ‘Karmageddon’ has sparked significant conversation and controversy, Iyah has stood her ground. She refused to compromise her vision when asked to change a key lyric line, leading to the end of her contract with her manager. She chose to walk away from her record label and now, fully independent, Iyah continues to carve her own path as an artist.

Her fearless approach is shaped by her unique perspective as a qualified medical doctor, having worked on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

LYRICS:
I open up my phone on a Monday morning
Staring at my screen
I’m tired and a little lonely
Mr Musk he said some shit the lefts are angry
Twitter wars and Gaza man it’s overwhelming
Maybe that’s how life becomes when
People less important than a profit line
No one cares about your dreams just pay
Your tax on time
Keep scrolling
Hold me near to you now
Gender, guns, religion and abortion rights
You better pick a tribe and hate the other side
Keep scrolling
But did you see Taylor live?
Man made virus watch the millions die
Biggest profit of their lives
Here’s inflation that’s your prize
This is Karmageddon
Turn on the news and eat their lies
Kim or Kanye pick a side
Cancel culture what a vibe
This is Karmageddon
Corporations swear they never lie
Politicians bribed for life
More than war it’s genocide
This is Karmageddon
Welcome to the chaos of the times
If you go left and I go right
Pray we make it out alive
This is Karmageddon
It’s fashion week celebs lose ribs
Balenciaga how’s the kids
Just ask Drake he’s losing beef
Kendrick killed him in his sleep
Diss tracks about beating up your queen
While women dying doesn’t cause a scene
While we’re fed all these distractions
Kids are killed from Israel’s actions
I’mma speak my mind
Sick to death of all these crazy lies
A circus for humanity’s decline
We just want a peaceful life give the people back their rights
And I’ve still got a beef
Cause Fauci’s laughing and we’ve been asleep
And WHO’s a liar and it’s running deep
Big pharma finna eat they a devil make them weak
Man made virus watch the millions die
Biggest profit of their lives
Here’s inflation that’s your prize
This is Karmageddon
Turn on the news and eat their lies
Kim or Kanye pick a side Cancel culture what a vibe
This is Karmageddon
Corporations swear they never lie
Politicians bribed for life
More than war it’s genocide
This is Karmageddon
Welcome to the chaos of the times
If you go left and I go right
Pray we make it out alive
This is Karmageddon

This song goes deep for me. I see it as more than a love song- ‘I won’t put my hands up and surrender’. It’s about quiet resilience and courage.

Whether it’s love, truth, justice, or whatever means something to you- choosing not to quit even when it feels like everything is against you takes a real kind of strength.
