The USA: A Perpetual War Machine – Involved in Conflicts Nearly Every Year Since 1776

Army Recruiting launched a rebrand in March 2023, bringing back a successful slogan of the 1980s. U.S. Army

If you’re an American born after 1979, the U.S. has been at war for your entire life. In fact, the U.S. has been at war for 93% of its existence as a nation, celebrating 250 years this July 4.

The United States has been involved in wars, military interventions, occupations, or coups (with overt or covert support) in the vast majority of years since 1776—roughly 230–235 of about 250 years (through 2026). This leaves only around 15–21 years with no recorded U.S. military involvement abroad or major domestic armed conflicts, depending on the exact criteria used.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) report titled “Instances of Use of United States Armed Forces Abroad, 1798–2023” (R42738) is the most authoritative official U.S. government compilation on this topic.
It documents hundreds of instances, including declared wars, undeclared conflicts, interventions, occupations, anti-piracy actions, Indian Wars, and support for regime changes. Coups often involved CIA or other covert actions without large-scale troop deployments (previous editions tallied 469 up to 2022; the 2023 update is similar or slightly higher. Does NOT include: Covert actions (e.g., many CIA coups), routine training, disaster relief, or permanent basing/occupation forces after major wars.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, formally announcing the separation of the 13 American colonies from Great Britain. This document declared the colonies to be “Free and Independent States” — marking the birth of the United States as a sovereign entity in the eyes of its founders. The phrase “the United States of America” first appeared in the Declaration. While full international recognition and a strong central government came later, the United States became a nation on July 4, 1776.
